Alec Derian - Bass Guitar
Alec has been playing upright and electric bass since the age of 15. Alec’s first and only upright bass was a gift from his high school orchestra teacher, Mrs. Janet Haas, because "he was [her] first high school student had that could play a D major scale in two octaves." He continues to play that same instrument to this day. High school provided Alec with an early start and a firm foundation in music performance. His high school music director, Mr.Jeffrey Leonard, introduced him not only to jazz music, but to legendary jazz trumpeter, mentor and educator Herb Pomeroy. During his junior and senior years of high school Alec notably performed with the New England Regional Grammy All-Star Jazz Band at the Berklee College of Music, and, during his senior year, won the bass chair for the Massachusetts All-State Jazz ensemble under the direction of bassist Rufus Reid. Earning a full music scholarship, Alec attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst towards a Bachelor’s degree in African-American Music and Jazz Performance. He had his first experience in the recording studio with then graduate student and current NYC saxophonist Nathan Childers. Alec has lived and performed in NYC, Paris, and Boston and surrounding areas. Over the years he has had the good fortune of performing with notable artists such as blues guitarist “Monster” Mike Welch, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, trombonist Jeff Galindo (musical director for Esperanza Spalding), and composer, author and historian Gunther Schuller.
